to me from Italy via the Internet.
"Last Sunday I was in Cerageto, and so I can
forward the pictures to you. I must
apologize: Private Pioli died on
February 22nd, and not
February the 2nd.
"In the pictures you can
see: the actual grave of private Pioli; the
tombstone sent by the US Government (at present it is nailed
to the wall of
the chapel, immediately
at the right of the grave, and a little upper;
above it, another old tombstone:
perhaps the parents of GI Pioli); a photo of
Joseph (in Italian, and as written on the grave: Giuseppe D.
Pioli wearing
the uniform of the US Army. This picture is placed on the grave.
What is written on the grave is no more
readable nowaday: ice (Cerageto is a
mountain village, 850 meters above sea level), sun, wind deleted all
the writing during the years. The
tombstone sent by the US Army stands steady.
At present I am busy setting up a
site about Cerageto and I wrote some lines
about PVT Pioli in a page of history of the village, saying
that in the struggle against Nazism there
was a boy from Cerageto, too, more or less
in the same period when your 92nd "Buffalo"
division was fighting in our valley
against German and fascist forces. If you have any piece of
information about private Pioli, I will add it to my history page.
