Task Force Herren Commendation

Task Force Herren

Before the 70th Division Artillery arrived in France, about 5 weeks after the three Regiments of Infantry had, these Regiments were designated as "TASK FORCE HERREN", and were assigned to other "on the line" Divisions. The 274th Regiment was assigned to the 45th Division . The 70th Division was reassembled, as a complete fighting Division, late in January, 1945.

About this time, the following commendation letter was received by our 274th Regimental Headquarters. The Commanding General of the 45th Division. had written the letter which is self explanatory. Attached to it is the endorsement of General Herren, Commanding Officer of "TASK FORCE HERREN".

HEADQUARTERS FORTY FIFTH INFANTRY DIVISION

APO 45, U. S. Army
Subject : Commendation
28 January 1945

To : Commanding Officer, 274th Infantry Regiment, through : Commanding General, 70th Infantry Division, APO 70, U. S. Army

I commend the officers and men of the 274th Infantry Regiment for the combat efficiency displayed while the Regiment was attached to this Division in the bitter fighting which stopped the enemy drive in the Hardt Mountains. Although this was your first combat assignment, you met an experienced and aggressive foe with courage and determination. The obscure situation confronting our forces as the enemy developed a major drive in our sector required numerous rapid shifts of units to meet new threats. You accomplished these movements with speed and coordination that reflect credit upon the discipline and training of the entire unit.
