274th Infantry Regiment
The following excerpt was sent to me by Bill Donofrio, E/274. It is a excerpt of a letter from Col. Cheves, author of "Snow Ridges and Pillboxes".

"We had it rough, but during my research I realize how fortunate our 2nd Bn was. A Bn of the 45th and one from the 79th was completely lost. The one from the 79th was lost at Drusenheim where we first located on the Rhine. We pulled away from there the day before the Germans came across.  I was getting nervous, hearing all that noise coming across the river. I knew they weren't planning a peaceful defense. You may not remember but I pulled troops back from the river except for listening posts, and had a   motorized reserve ready to attack in case they across. By that time, our Bn had a 9 mile front, impossible to defend everywhere. We were expendable I guess, but we would have given them a hot time for awhile. I know you feel the same way I do, that we were fortunate to survive. There was so much fate involved."
