274th Infantry: S-3 Journal 3- 7 Jan 45
The following S-3 report covers the period 3 Jan - 7 Jan 1945. It is on file with the National Archives and all spelling errors have been retained.

2210   do Forward CP PETITE PIERRE opened.  
2300   do CO and Asst S-3 went forward to contact CO 276 and CO 79th Div at ZITTERSHEIM  
2220 VOCG do PETITE PIERRE, 2d Bn located at Puberg prepare to counterattack to the E, N and NW; 3d Bn, Cn Co. At Co. located at WEINBOURG prepare counterattack showing particular emphais to N and NW and be prepared to assum responsibilities for protection of Ingwiller-Volksberg Rd. Kitchen trains located at Neuwiller.  
0300   1/4/45 CO and Asst S-3 recon 3d Bn area until 0800.  
1000 VOCG do At Petite-Pierre "2d Bn at Puberg prepared to assist 276th w/counterattack to E toward Wingen".  
1030 VOCG do VOCO 275th to CO 2d Bn "Prepare to assist 276th in attack to E. Clear woods W of Wingen".  
1124   do CP 276th Inf ZITTERSHEIM Co. A advancing on M-7. 3d Bn 276th advancing along road toward W to Wingen. (See notes attached of DO).  
1410   do No wire at Sugar six zero five now expected tonight or tomorrow. Salvage wire day and night. (CG TF HERREN 1207A).  
1535 1 do CP Fox 3 located in vicinity of SCHNIETZWALD opened 1100. Local security established at 1200.  
1600   do Our People Plat in town 705400 were driven out last night by the Germans. (CG TF HERREN 1305A) Cos. E & G on line Co. H in support.  
2100   1/4/45 Received G-3 Periodic Report from Div.  
2230   do Received F.O. #5 TF HERREN.  
0900 5 1/5/45 White will need 33 Pers carriers to complete movement to PUBERG on 2 hours notice (White 6 0307).  
1200 TP do Call 45th Div for arty fire. No arty attached or for support. 2d Bn dig in along road in present position. (VQ)
2 rifles sqds and one mortar sqd of Co. L supporting 313th Inf (Blue 3) One Plat Co. I sent in place of 2 sqds to repel attack.
 
1205 TP do 2d Bn expects to stay in PUBERG today (White 6)  
1230 TP do Ex. Off. To report to CG at once with Lt. Gordon (VQ)  
1300 TP do Cos. E & F sent into attack at 1300 from PUBERG and all three companies with Co. h in direct support engaged enemy and inflicted casualties up until 1700 5 Jan 45  
1320   do Co. C 781st attached as of now.  
1930 TP 1/5/45 Patrol of VI Corps found a lot of bobby traps. 501st A.F.A. Bn attached to us.  
1935 TP do After talking with POWER, continue the patroling of left flank Wyo Blue to right flank WRIGGLE White as previously ordered. (Maj. Thorn Asst S-3 HERREN) Notified Blue 3
1800-2000 TP do 501 AFA Bn located 1st town NE from 2d Bn. Contact them for liason. They have 2 liasons with 2d Bn 276th. Told to stay until White 6 takes over. Get some liason with 3d Bn. Run wire to WYANDOTE board. Check Cos. In line 3d Bn. Check reserve and where is outpost line. Patrolling at all times is what they want. Break tank company down into platoons with Bns. Coprs said "Don't do it." Corps said no flanks. Coordinates of new location (84.8-34.1) 3d Bn CP changing at 2000. Wire is in new place. POWER 3 gave direct orders cutting 2 eschelons of command. "Put 2 companies in hills and one in reserve. No flank patrols at all'. Col. Landstrom reported:-one rifle plat. Co. L captured 11 prisoners several MG. No casualties (82.8-36.6). Co. L plat. Digging in and will remain as detached OP. Small enemy forces on high ground (82.2-36.7) at 1630. Enemy auto weapons firing on our tanks from draws (82.2-37.2) MG location (83.0-37.2). Has arty liason with him. Area in vicinity of (82.3-33.3) booby trapped. G-3 Corps called Col. Landstrom 1400 today. He wanted 3d Bn in one spot only. Which was done. Cancelled orders G-3. POWER wanted whole Bn in reserve held in ROHRBACH and not to worry about anything else. 3 said no sector, just point. 3 said order was issued 2 days ago and was mad and wanted to know why Col. Landstrom was not there earlier.  
1800-2000 TP 1/5/45 2 Bns krauts supporting coming down 3d Bn left flank. 313th out in front of him, attack against them. Gen. HERREN wants Col. CHEVES to call at WRIGGLE 3. Co. G held position now occupied by Cos. E & F from 1700 4 Jan to 0800 5 Jan 45.  
2005 TP do Told White 5 to have White 6 call WRIGGLE 3. Contact WYANDOTE 6 by tlephone immediately at WRIGGLE 3.  
0930   1/6/45 3d Bn receiving arty fire. Cn Co. moves up to support arty for 3d Bn. WINGEN has not been taken as of 0930.  
1030 TP do Road blocks that were erected by FOSTER are being moved. 275th to take one from 3d Bn 274, erect road block on the road NW of ZINSWILLER (88.5-36.2). Report to Corps Thru Div what we are using there.-- AT guns, bazookas, riflemen, etc.  
1130 LO do Co. K less 1 plat will move to road block NW of ZINSWILLER immediately. Also 2 AT guns (CO Blue)  
1135 TP do In compliance message received 1045 via Cn. Co. report to Corps thru Div strength road block (885-362) grenade launchers and one bazooka. Will reenforce their position today to strength of 1 rifle plt supported by one weapons plat. And 2 57mm AT sqds. Will report when reenforced to above strength. At least 2 road blocks will be prepared and defended. (CO Blue).  
1200 TP do CO reported he moved Cn Co. behind 3d Bn, 313th in castle surrounded by Krauts. Blue has one company on left one company on right, 2 in reserve. Arty ready to fire in front of Blue positions. Col Morgan not in command of our Bn attached to 276th. An am train of 276th captured by enemy.  
1300 TP 1/6/45 Co. F leading, Co. G following Co. E in reserve,* Co. H supporting the attack. Are going to coordinate with tanks and AT guns in clearing the town of WINGEN. At present time town is 2/3 clear. (White 6)  
1400 TP do Co. F pinned down at 1215. At 1330 tanks followed by Co. F jumped off. Tanks to fire at everything they saw in the town. Co. G following Co. F* cleaning up snipers. Co. E in reserve. Snipers fire coming from hill on left flank. 276th held down by fire from hill N of tracks.  
1500 6 do Request 2 days emergency rations issued to troops. Consumption on Bn order. (Blue 6 1258) Probable issue 1/7/45
1520 7 do Report that L.O. (Lt. Pryor) has reported to CP 45th Div to represent the 3d Bn. He is available to represent TF Fox if desired by Regtl Comdr. (Blue 6 1305)  
1525   do Received msg and overlay of front line positions and patrols 1130 6 Jan 45. Copy of overlay furnished 45th Div direct at request of 45th Div. (Blue 6 1330)  
1525 TP do Unconfirmed report the Germans are counterattacking in WINGEN (Sgt Counts, White)  
1540 TP do Report from Lt. Stolz that counterattack by Germans in bogging down our progress. Live automatic fire from enemy in town.  
1730 TP do Closed CP at WEITERSWILLER, opened CP at INGWILLER.  
1800 TP do Request 20 copies HAGENAU map #XXXVIII-14 (Blue 6 1525)  
2200   1/6/45 Lt. Parsons sent to Cn Co. to bring back 1 plat. to support 2d Bn. Plat left CP 0230. At ordered by phone to send one plat to 2d Bn. Left CP guided.  
2200 TP do 2d Bn CP moved from PUBERG to ZITTERSHEIM (White 3)  
2210 TP do Counterattack halted on edge of town. 2d Bn digging in. (White 6)  
0330   1/7/45 Cn Co. moved fromposition 1500 6 Jan 45. 45th Divarty has lost contact. 274th will notify 45th Divarty as to location of Cn Co. so wire can be laid between units. 3d Bn 274 will operate under control CG 45th Div effective 070700 Jan 45 (CG HERREN)  
0500 1 do Received copy of direct order from POWER 6 Jan. Copy enclosed with message. (Blue 6)  
0920 TP do Co. L supported by 1 MG Plat and 1 Cn Plat, 1 Plat light tanks, 1 I & R Plat is in position (83.5-36.5) (84.2-35.7) 0900. They are blocking excape path of elements of enemy being attacked from W by WRIGGLE White (Blue 6)  
1000 TP do PASSPORT (180th Regt) being hit hard. Direction of attack toward WINGEN. (White 30) Notified G-3
1000   do LO reported warning order to move.  
1015 TP do Co. L encountered small enemy force (83.3-36.6) now moving to contact and develop. 30 logs across road just N of mine fields. South plat. in position as shown this morning. No arty heard since 0800 this morning from WRIGGLE White (Blue 5)  
1100   do Liaison from Div reported with warning order concerning prepared move to new position.  
1345 TP 1/7/45 3d Bn reported that Co. L located in position coordinates (83.5-36.5) (84.2-35.7) (Reinforced with one MG plat, 1 Cn plat and 1 Plat light tanks) is pinned down by auto weapons fire from dug in positions. (Blue 3)  
1425   do CO 274 reports WINGEN taken approximately 1330 7 Jan 1945.  
1545 1 do Request time release of K and B am train. Will Bn carry prescribed load am? Is Cn Plat released from attachment? (Blue 6 1415)  
1445 TP do Germans firing arty fire on Co. I. Also have Co. L pinned down. S-3 Fox called G-3 notified him of situation and asked for support from 2d Bn 276th Inf. Counterattack 2d Bn 276 - "Attack due N of present position, staying on left of Co. L. They are in contact with enemy".
