Every other day the boys get a chance to take a shower. Today some of the boys got a chance to see their first movie in months. We still have our rear CP in Spicheren, France.

Mar 20

Company I, led by Capt Donahue, marched through the Dragon's Teeth, the outer defense of the Siegfried Line. The Dragon's Teeth is just outside of the city of Saarbrucken. It's the seventh largest German City. The Company met no opposition when entering the city. The city was in complete ruin. After a little investigation eleven prisoners were taken. One of our men shot three of the prisoners, quite by accident, when his BAR went off. The odd thing about this is that it was done with only one bullet. The Company occupies the western section of the city. There was no casualties. Pfc Rudy Senser was evacuated to the Hospital as an (NBC).

Mar 21

The Company is now in Saarbrucken. At 0900 the rear CP moves up to the city. The new Cp is housed in the only house that had not been touched by the bombing of the city. the city must have been hit hard from the looks of things. This is the very first German city we had entered into and we were very pleased with the nice work that the Air Force had done to the place. A tremendous amount of high explosives must have been used on the city, not mentioning the countless number times the place had been bombed. The boys are having a grand time in the city. It's really the first time the boys have had a chance to relax. They are looting almost all the billets in the city. Nothing is being left unturned. The following men made Pfc's eff. Mar 20, 1945: Eugene J Armstrong, Elias A Beas, Richard L Calkins, Earnest R Culberson, John F DeVries, Richard G Lykke, James L Mayfield, Stephen W Maynard, Robert H McMahon, Caroll C McNabb, Donald V Meyer, Leroy E Mortensen, Ronald L Newkirk, Herbert G Otto, Gravil B Neal, John A Pallone, James G Pickens, Thomas R Radcliff, Walter R Snyder, Sylvester Rosek.

Mar 22

Lt Edward W Moeller has been transfered to Bn. S1. He was a swell fellow, hate to see him go. Lt. Herbert K Bell Jr takes the position of Executive Officer. Three men return to the Company from the Hospital: Pfc Rudy Senser, Pfc James J Leigh, Pvt Walter E Westerberg. The front is now 40 miles away. This is the furthest we have been from the front in months. This is what you could call rear echelon. the boys are riding around Saarbrucken on horses, bikes, etc., fun is being had by all.

Mar 23

Two men return to the Company from a Rest Camp: Pfc Hollis L Curtis, Pfc Robert W Uhl. Today the Company had a formation and Capt. Donahue made the following awards: Posthumous Silver Star to LeeRoy G Fulcher (KIA in France 19/2/45), The Silver Star to Pvt. A. G. Ulrich of Virginia, The Bronze Star to T/Sgt Harvey Shirley of Ill., S/Sgt Delfino S Meraz of Calif., T/Sgt Julius Chesna of N.J., T/Sgt J.V.Skeen of W.V., T/Sgt David M Field of Mich, S/Sgt J.Y. Valenzuela of Calif., Sgt. C.F. Stender of Ohio, Sgt. H. W. McKean of Penn., Pfc J.L. Reid of Ala., and T/5 W.W.Geier of N.J. The Company is still in Saarbrucken and it's just like being back in the States. It's very hard to believe that there is a war on because it's so quiet around here. the Company received 100 bottles of wine today. There will be a few big heads tomorrow.
