INTELLIGENCE ANNEX

The German troops in the area of the raid were from the 880th Regiment of the 347th Infantry Division. The counter-attacks against the raid on the first day were carried out solely by troops from the reserve of the 347th Infantry Division. However, on the second day, additional troops and artillery were rushed to this sector of the German Force. A company of officer candidates from Saarbrucken, and some self-propelled guns and tanks from the 17th SS Panzer Grenadier Division and spearheaded the attacking force of the 347th Division on the second day. It was this attack which succeeded in penetrating the positions on "F" Company's flank.

Summer 1944: Took part in Normandy battle. Suffered heavy losses in withdrawal from France. Reformed from miscellaneous troops. Added 880th Grenadier Regiment.
September - October 1944: Transferred to the Saar area. Engaged east of Metz.
December 1944- January 1945: At Saarlautern

October 1943: Formed in Western France as Panzer Grenadier division, including numerous Belgians and Russians.
June 1944: Took part in Normandy Battle. Suffered heavy losses.
September 1944: Refitted in France. Incorporated 49th and 51st Panzer Grenadier Brigades, which had moved to France from Denmark ard were intended to form new 26th and 27th SS Panzer Divisions.
Autumn 1944: Engaged in Eastern France
January 1945: On western Front, Saar area.
